The first week is not a greatest-hits montage. It is: land at the correct airport, get baht and a SIM, sleep, learn one rail line, do one wat properly, eat at street height, then either leave Bangkok or double down. Jet lag will lie to you about all of this. Believe the water bottle more than the 22:00 “we should find live music”.

Day 0 — land at the airport you actually booked

Your first week in Thailand — on the ground.
Your first week in Thailand — on the ground.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are different cities of airport. Low-cost carriers love DMK; long-haul often loves BKK. The hotel “near the airport” that is near the other one is a two-hour joke.

Immigration: UK passports were still being stamped for 60-day visa exemption as of August 2026. A Cabinet approval to roll that back to 30 days had not yet been gazetted — check Visa & entry and GOV.UK before you fly, not after the queue. TDAC is required. Passport six months validity and a blank page. Proof of onward travel is still a rule even when it is not always asked at the airport.

Official taxi queue or Grab. Ignore the unofficial tout with a laminated rate card. ATMs in arrivals: foreign-ATM fee plus your bank, withdraw enough to not dip again tomorrow. Money and SIM.

A Type O travel adapter and a small first-aid kit earn their space on day one. If they are in the hold, you will discover this at 1% battery. Packing.

Drink bottled or hotel-filtered water. The ice in a busy shop is usually factory ice; the tap is not your friend yet. Sleep before you “do” Bangkok. The city will still be there after a nap. You will not be, in any useful sense, if you start with Khao San at midnight.

Days 1–3 — phone, rail, one wat

Day 1 — phone and water. Tourist SIM or eSIM at the airport or at a 7-Eleven / AIS / True shop. Passport scan. We will not quote a fake 299 THB pack; expect hundreds of baht for on the order of 8–15 days of data, and verify at the kiosk. Keep the UK number for bank texts. Eat something ordinary — the first 7-Eleven rice box (commonly 45–69 THB) is a legitimate meal, not a failure. Table & Bazaar: 7-Eleven meals. Alcohol in 7-Eleven only in the 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–midnight windows, and not on major Buddhist holy days.

Day 2 — one rail line. Ride the BTS as a loop, not as a sightseeing tour. Learn how to get back to the hotel without a driver. MRT is the underground cousin; together they beat Grab across town at dusk. Grab is for rain, luggage, late hours, and the bits the rail does not reach. Do not make Grab your personality. Getting around.

Day 3 — one temple, properly. Wat Pho or Wat Arun, or a quieter neighbourhood wat if the queue at the famous one will wreck you. Shoulders and knees, shoes off, no Buddha comedy. This is People & Spirit territory: Temple etiquette. A linen scarf in the daypack is the packing-list item that matters today. Do not stack the Grand Palace on the same afternoon unless you like heatstroke as a hobby.

Jet lag: morning light helps; extra espresso at 21:00 does not. Bangkok heat plus a British winter departure is a specific drunk. Walk in shade, sit in air-con, do not measure the week in temples ticked.

Days 4–7 — eat, widen, then move or stay

Your first week in Thailand — later in the day.
Your first week in Thailand — later in the day.

Day 4 — street height. A night market or a Chinatown crawl. Rice at the centre of a shared table; noodles are often a one-person bowl. How to order and street food. Mai phet if you need it; the condiment caddy is how Thais finish a dish. You do not need a tasting menu on day four. You need a stall with a queue.

Day 5 — leave the hotel radius. Chatuchak if it is weekend, a river or khlong boat, or Ayutthaya as a day trip if your legs still work. Bangkok. This is still not the day to rent a motorbike.

Days 6–7 — move or double down. North to Chiang Mai, south to one coast. Do not book both coasts in one week; they run different monsoon clocks. Which coast. If you stay, pick one museum or one neighbourhood and actually be there. Three nights is enough to learn the BTS. Seven nights is enough to stop treating Bangkok as a layover with better food.

What not to do in week one. Do not buy a timeshare. Do not ride a motorbike the afternoon you land. Do not treat the Grand Palace as a box to sprint. Do not joke about the king. Do not overstay later because you lost count — extension is about 1,900 THB for 30 days; overstay is 500 THB/day capped at 20,000, and being caught is worse than presenting yourself. Visa & entry.

Songkran (13–15 April 2026) in week one is a different country: water, packed buses, Bangkok emptying. Loy Krathong (24 November 2026) is a river evening, not a reason to skip the SIM. Calendar: Thai calendar.

Day-by-day

DayJobDone when…
0 LandCorrect airport (BKK or DMK), official taxi or Grab, ATM, water, sleepYou know the hotel door and the nearest 7-Eleven
1 PhoneSIM/eSIM, first rice box, walk a small radiusMaps work without hotel Wi-Fi
2 RailBTS (and MRT if it helps), hotel without a driverYou can miss a stop and recover
3 WatOne temple, dress code, no comedy photosYou have sat down, not only stood in a courtyard
4 FoodMarket or Chinatown, cash, mai phet if neededYou have eaten at street height without a crisis
5 WidenOne neighbourhood that is not the hotel soiChatuchak / boat / Ayutthaya — pick one
6–7 Move or stayNorth, or one coast, or a second Bangkok layerYou have not booked both Andaman and Gulf

If day 0 ate the afternoon and you land at 23:00, slide the table by a day. The order matters more than the calendar date: sleep → SIM → rail → wat → market → decision.

Grab versus rail is not a moral test. Luggage and rain are Grab. A 19:00 hop across Sukhumvit is BTS. Dual-app life is allowed.

The first 7-Eleven is also the test of alcohol hours and whether you can microwave a box without performing confusion. Ask. Pay first. The beer fridge will refuse you at 15:00; that is the window, not a personal slight.

One working wai, one scarf, one adapter, one rail map. That is a first week. The rest is a country you can come back for.
